Hook

Last week, I got a message from someone who clearly offended about me making a joke about my hand. And I'm like, it's my hand. Who are you trying to be offended for? I think we've got this backwards, so let's talk about it. I don't know why I'm holding my arm like this. So, I was born like this. And I'm 30 years old now. Growing up, this wasn't the easiest thing for people around and for me to have an emotional reaction every time someone teased me about it. I developed a very thick skin and I also developed a very dark sense of humor because the idea was, if I was the first one to make a joke about myself, then I've beaten you to the punchline. You can't attack me if I've already gotten or beaten you to the punchline. Whenever I meet someone new, there's always this awkward moment where they freeze up and they don't really know how to respond when they've just noticed that I look different. Mostly because no one's ever told them growing up how to respond, what to say, or to think around this. It's all, make sure you don't offend anyone at all costs. So, I come in with a stupid joke and the whole tension melts away and now we can have a real conversation. I have had many operations in this hand. I have needles and knives and sharp objects poked through it. I still have wire and metal jammed inside my finger from an operation that went wrong. If you think the words are going to hurt me. I don't bleed anymore. A joke is simply not the thing that's going to hurt me. So, ask your questions, at the jokes, and if you have kids, please raise them questions and rather stare and go silent. I'd much rather see the next generation of kids grow up be curious and not have killed off, rather than terrified of saying the wrong thing.
