There's a video of me

There's a video of me when I was 16 years old and every now and then I go back and look at it because it shows the moment when I decided what I want to do with my life. So this is a video of me my first prosthetic arm. It's with a company that was called Touch Bionics. It was based out in Edinburgh in Scotland. And yes, that is 16-year-old me. God, I looked so young, skinny. I hated being that skinny. I was born without my right hand and for 16 years I've done everything in my own way. That doesn't mean I couldn't do stuff. I think the only thing that defeated me to this day is bloody laces. But for 16 years I figured out a way to do practically everything and it always meant doing it slightly different, but it just worked for me. Then when they fitted this to my arm and then switched on. Yeah, feeling those fingers close for the first time was really something. And I want to be honest, what this moment actually meant for me, what it felt like because people people assumed that this happened and I thought to myself, finally, I'm I'm complete. I'm 100% human or like I felt incomplete growing. I well, I say that. Bullying will take it in myself. I never really felt incomplete growing. What I really took away from this was someone a team people built this for me. A team of engineers sat in a room and made a machine because they wanted to change people's lives better. And I sat there in an afternoon and I saw immediately technology could do to people's lives. I mean, I at that time I was torn between going to film or studying engineering. I love making films. I mean, I still do. Look, looking talking to camera. But I realized when I working with this that it felt important to me to focus on building things that change people's lives. Leave the world in a better place when I die than when I came into it. That's the beginning. I after this, I decided to go study engineering. It's been a crazy ride. So yeah, if anyone asks me why I do what I do, that's the measure I try to measure myself against.
