Many people assume chlorine is directly responsible for the burning sensation and redness they experience after swimming. However, research has shown that the real culprit is often a group of chemicals called chloramines, which form when chlorine reacts with substances introduced by swimmers. These substances can include sweat, urine, body oils, skin cells, cosmetics, and other organic compounds. As chlorine binds to and breaks down these materials, chloramines are produced, which can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Properly maintained pools with adequate filtration, water circulation, and balanced chlorine levels typically contain fewer chloramines, making them less likely to cause irritation. Showering before swimming and avoiding urination in the water can help prevent chloramine formation. While micro-organisms can be harmful, the familiar red-eye effect is typically from the chlorine reacting with substances brought in by swimmers. What many people assume is evidence that the pool water itself is harmful may actually be evidence that the chlorine is reacting with substances brought in by swimmers.
