No one has once told me to take my contacts out when I enter a body of water. I need someone who's not a hypochondriac to tell me if this is true or not. Are people actually going blind from showering with their contacts in? I can definitely help you with this because not only am I a hypochondriac, but I'm also an eye doctor. This is where we need to do better. We talk about contact lenses in terms of how to put them in, how to care for them, but we should always talk to our patients not to swim or shower in them. This is because your risk of infection raises significantly and contact lens related infections are already bad enough. But when you're in a body of water or tap water, you can get a very serious infection called Acanthamoeba keratitis. 90% of those patients blind. Now one of the biggest questions I get is, why do I not get this infection if I'm swimming in a body of water? And the reason is we have a tear film and a cornea that is able to protect itself against these amoebas or parasites. But the difference is a contact lens, it's able to absorb water and allow that parasite to sit on the surface of allowing it to infect it and create a lot of corneal problems. A huge problem three decades to four decades ago because people were not properly caring for their and hygienic practices have drastically improved. We still need to educate our patients not to do things like swim or shower in these because there is risk there. To learn more about your eyes, then follow me to improve your IQ.
