🚨Should you stop your child’s ADHD medication over the summer? Here’s my perspective—as a mum who has lived it. When my son was first diagnosed with ADHD, his medication affected his appetite and he was losing weight. Our paediatrician suggested we take a break over the summer so he could catch up on growing. So we did. Every summer. Years later, my son said something I’ll never forget. “Mum, I wish I’d stayed on my medication. My ADHD didn’t disappear just because school ended.” That hit me hard. Folks, ADHD doesn’t take the summer off. It doesn’t just affect school. It affects friendships. Emotional regulation. Impulse control. Family relationships. Safety. Daily routines. Executive functioning. Every. Single. Day. Now, am I saying every child should stay on medication over the summer? Absolutely not. Every child is different. Every medication is different. Every family is different. This is a conversation to have with your child’s doctor—not a decision to make simply because school’s out. And here’s the piece I think we don’t talk about enough… Medication can be life-changing. But medication doesn’t teach executive function skills. It doesn’t teach planning. Time management. Organisation. Emotional regulation. Self-motivation. Those skills still need to be taught. That’s one of the biggest reasons I created my 5-week ADHD Parenting Bootcamp. Because whether your child takes medication or not, they still need the skills to thrive. I’d love to hear from you. Did your family continue medication over the summer, or take a break?
