What Walmart paid me in 2.5 years, $252,125. I only kept $37,000. It's about 1200 bucks a month for two and a half years worth of work. I got this random email from a buyer at Walmart. I thought it was a scam. Turns out it wasn't. I jumped on Zoom. She wanted to put me in 4,000 stores. I said pump the brakes, let's only do 500. I don't want to screw this up. She says okay. So we get set up. Spreadsheets, nightmare to get set up. Turns out my packaging wasn't good enough. I had to get it tested. I had to pay for extra labels to put on the outside of my packaging for loss prevention, little RFID stickers with a made in USA thing on it. Where do you even get those? Found the place, cost me thousands. Can't ship a single marker to Walmart. Inner packs. Kidding, vendor packs. Take two markers, put them in a small box, take three of those boxes, put them in another box, put two labels on them. That's what you ship. Thousands of POs coming in for very small amounts of units. Very hard to track. Crap, I need an EDI. 700 bucks a month. Invoicing still isn't working. Had to manually invoice. Took hours. I can't ship these products myself. Holy crap, I need a consolidator. Lots of setup, lots of money. Okay, things are going smooth. It's working. 18 months later, I get an email. You owe us $140,000. What? One of the items on your Excel spreadsheet was wrong. We double paid you. Shit. Thousands of invoices needed to be audited by myself and my team. Turns out, I only owed them 44 grand. So I cut a check. Profits went down. Ouch. Buyer goes on maternity leave. Rapport is gone. New buyer comes in, decides that she wants to axe the category and us. We lose the account. I'm still shipping, have about two months left, and I'm not making much money at all. Now I have orphaned inventory. Got to get it returned. Stickers I haven't used. Cardboard has to go to the dump. Wind down the EDI, wind down the consolidator, still paying for it. Not to mention, I don't get paid by Walmart for 90 days. I should have asked myself these three questions. The first one being, can you afford to play the game? Where are the unseen costs that you don't know about? I just mentioned them. Two, can you afford the float? Can your business survive without getting paid for 90 to 120 days? Because that's the reality of retail. Three, opportunity cost. This is the one that got me. Because most mistakes are disguised as wins. I thought it was the holy grail for selling a product. I really wanted the clout, really wanted to say we could do it. The profit and loss that the numbers looked really good, but in reality, my bank account said no and my attention said no. I took my eye off the prize, my business suffered. I could have done more of what was working, but I didn't because I was distracted by Walmart.
