There were times where I really didn’t think this day would come - prejudice, discouragement, illness, life-changing diagnoses, 26 ICU stays, 17 months bedbound in hospital during Covid, disability discrimination so indescribable that it led to a legal fight for justice, silenced and isolated for 2.5yrs. Then, the tears and trauma. And of course, all the tiny voices that constantly said “you’ll never be a doctor, because you’re disabled”. _ The opinions and beliefs of a big able-bodied world rarely welcomed me. But one thing my School Principal said to me on my last day of school was: “Alexandra, it is better to try, and fail, than fail to try”, and that has stuck with me since. _ I have tried and failed countless times. My body has failed me, and so has the system. But one thing I have never failed at is always believing in myself. And that’s a message I want to share - with hard work, perseverance, not always taking no for an answer, and always believing in yourself, you can achieve anything. And with innovation, open-mindedness, and willingness to learn about the capabilities of disability, the world can be a greater place. Still, I’m grateful to the bullies, haters, and dinosaurs - it is thanks to them that I became even more determined to prove them wrong, fight the injustices, and go with my own gut and heart. Tickboxes aren’t for us all. _ I double-graduated this week at @northeastern.ldn - a place that became a light in my darkness - when another institution failed me so badly and hurt me too much. London became a place of lifelong friends, family, and my dreams coming true. I’ll forever be grateful for that. _ So that’s it. Onto the next big adventure - this time with Dr before my name and starting a job where I get to give back to an NHS that saved me so many times over. I’m coming world, and I’m excited to share the next chapter. _ #fyp #doctor #medicine #graduation #nevergiveup
