“Somewhere over the rainbow” is about hope and optimism, about better things ahead. They are words that can uplift us in difficult times, reminding us of the possibility of happiness and joy. To me, “somewhere over the rainbow” isn’t so much about a place - it’s about keeping your heart open and hopeful even in tough times. I remind myself that when there were hard times or sad times in the past, those dark times almost always led to something much better and brighter. We just have to keep our heart open to possibility. This rainbow jewelry dish is created from stoneware clay that is glazed and fired in a kiln. I first start the process by pressing crochet lace into soft clay. This piece of lace crochet is from the same box of vintage doilies that I rescued a while back. It’s another beautiful pattern. I wanted to have some more fun with the colors and celebrate rainbows. I paint rainbow colors onto the clay surface using a mix of ceramic stains and underglazes that I thin a bit with water. I prefer to have the colors be subtle and translucent. (They look bright when I’m applying them, but I know they will slightly soften in the kiln’s high temperatures.) Then I glaze the ceramic and fire it to over 2200F/1200C degrees in a pottery kiln. The coating of glaze will melt into a layer of clear glossy glass. After the glaze firing, I add tiny touches of real gold by hand, and I fire the piece again in the kiln. #rainbowart #satisfying #pottery #colorful #creativity
