This flower is known as the flower of love. In fact, that’s what Agapanthus’ botanical name translates to from ancient Greek: “love flower.” In Victorian times, when social etiquette didn’t allow for open expressions of affection, an Agapanthus bloom became a quiet way to send a message of love and adoration. I love the florets of agapanthus and they remind me of little fireworks bursting into bloom. Here I press a few florets and leaves into clay, capturing their unique shape. After coloring and glazing them, i fire the piece in my pottery kiln. I then add a bit of mother-of-pearl luster to give the flowers a shimmering iridescence, and I add real gold to the edge of the dish. I love experimenting with clay and botanical patterns this way, discovering new ways to preserve little moments from nature and transform them into something lasting.
