This experiment pisses me off because every time I hear someone talk about it, I hear them get it wrong. And that includes trillionaires like Elon Musk. This is the double slit experiment. I'm gonna go quick and explain why this tweet by Elon is completely wrong. That tweet was in reference to a video. And if you know anything about physics, you know this. And you probably hate it. This video is one of the reasons why so many people get quantum mechanics wrong. And it's because they try to woowoofy the effects of quantum mechanics as we go. We start with a simple experiment where we have this cannon launching little balls, which are particles, get launched through one slit. And as expected, they create this pattern on the backside of the board. Next up, we add two slits. And what do we notice? We get two lines matching the exact same pattern as the slits. This is exactly what we expect if conventional matter through the slits. Now let's talk about waves. If a wave propagates through the slit, pattern. When the wave hits the opposite wall, this gradient with a pattern in the middle, this gradient here indicates the likelihood or the probability of where the wave is going. Now what happens when we induce two slits? We get what is called an interference pattern on the backside of the board. This pattern will match up with where the peaks and the troughs cancel out on and this will indicate a wider gradient of probability for each part of the wave. So they did this with light. They started this experiment to have been tiny pieces of matter. When it goes through the first slit, it creates what the first pattern. Through the second slit, it creates what you wouldn't expect, the interference pattern. What's happening is when we add a second slit to observe that the light is actually propagating on a wave. Is called a probability wave. And it indicates the probability or the likelihood of where the photon will land. Okay, well, maybe the particles are like interacting with each other. The photons one at a time. And they still got this pattern, one at a time, indicating that even though they thought to behave like a particle, it instead behaved like a wave. Everything in this, this point tracks with the original. But this is all woo woo and start to mystify the whole experiment. That once an observer starts to observe the particle, then the interference pattern will disappear. And you instead get this pattern, one that you would expect with particles, not waves. You take away and the interference pattern comes back. This is true, but it's also replace the word observer with measured and interacted with. An observer is not something that is making the interaction in order to observe something or measure something, you need to interact with that. It's the act of interacting or measuring, not observing something that removes the interference pattern. What this means is that are no observers. These laws still because you don't need an observer for something to be interacted with or measured. I hope this clears up some things. I really wish trillionaires would stop spreading misinformation on the internet because you might money in the to act like this is a building rocket ships and going to Mars. But there's real actually starving. They don't have that luxury. This is just a simulation.
