Making an erasable pen work took two parts. First the ink, using a formula Pilot spent decades perfecting that turns fully transparent when it warms up. Then the eraser, a smooth material that generates heat through friction. So instead of scraping ink off the paper like a pencil eraser, the FriXion just removes the color. The marks are still there, you just can't see them anymore. It was especially revolutionary in Europe, where schools required students to write in pen.

If you wanted to make corrections you'd have to reach to your correction fluids you correction tapes in order to fix mistakes. And you could use things like the sand eraser. It physically shaves off the top layer of the paper to remove the ink particles and the part of the paper. But that is inconsistent it get's messy and it can create holes in your pages. It's not a great Pilot came out with the FriXion pen. It's a functional erasable pen. Now, how do you create erasable pens? There are two parts to the solution. The first part is the ink. Pilot had a patent for a very long time where the ink color can shift on heat and for decades perfecting that ink. And eventually got that ink to go fully transparent after heat was applied. So that's the first step to the solution. But the next question is how do you apply heat to a specific location where you'd want to erase? And that's where the top part of the FriXion pen comes in. It's this slippery material that looks like an eraser as you're trying to erase your markings it generates heat on the paper. Because it's only generating heat on that specific location that area disappears. You're not physically removing any ink off the paper. You're just changing the properties of the ink. Which is very clever and it was revolutionary in Europe because students were required to write in pen. Although, there are some down sides to an erasable pen. Because it is heat-sensitive, if you leave your writings on somewhere warm it can all disappear. It's been quite a while since they first released it. Now you get more colors in various sizes they have made a lot of changes they have made some updates it's a much improved product compared to how it was at the beginning.
