No, those white spots aren't from the sun that some people get in summer and they're not vitiligo. This is something called tinea versicolor and it's caused by an overgrowth of yeast called Malassezia, which is normally on everyone's skin. Heat, humidity, sweating, and oily skin all create the perfect environment for this yeast to start growing, which is why it's so common in the summer months. And that yeast interferes with your skin's normal pigment production, which is why the lesions often look lighter than your skin or even darker than your skin with fine scale on top of them. So with summer tans, they become much more noticeable because there's just more contrast. The good news is it's very treatable and it's not contagious. Over-the-counter dandruff shampoos like selenium sulfide or ketoconazole work great. The key is to leave it on your skin for several minutes before rinsing it off. And it can take weeks to fully treat. But just remember, even after it's fully treated, like the scale's gone, the skin can take even longer to repigment, so it might look like you still have it for even months.
