Foods to avoid during the Cyclospora outbreak While investigators work to identify and contain the source of this outbreak, it may be worth taking a few extra precautions with foods that have historically been linked to Cyclospora. This doesn’t have to be forever—just until the source is identified and the outbreak is under control. For now, consider avoiding: • Prewashed bagged salad kits and salad bars • Bagged spinach and kale • Pre-cut fruit bowls • Fresh raspberries, strawberries, and other berries • Raw leafy greens • Fresh herbs like cilantro • Premade pico de gallo, fresh salsa, and premade guacamole Safer options include: • Hot, fully cooked meals and soups • Fruits with peels that you scrub and peel yourself (or bake when appropriate) • Whole tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions that are thoroughly washed (cooking them adds another layer of protection) • Frozen fruit • Cooked, frozen, or canned vegetables • Dried herbs Heating food to 158°F (70°C) or higher can kill Cyclospora. These recommendations are temporary and are meant to reduce risk while public health officials identify the contaminated food source. #cyclospora #cyclosporaoutbreak #parasite
