Disney live-action remakes are starting to fail. Disney spent over $250 million on the Moana live action remake, tanking at the open to just $95 million worldwide. Against that budget, not even half was made up. I have a theory on why some Disney live action remakes work and why others don't. Successful live action films that are 30 years old, and the remakes often cast top talent that draws viewers in. Movies like The Little Mermaid with Halle Bailey, Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson. Moana, while it's a great story and amazing animation, is only about 10 years old. And the second movie came out less than two years ago. There's something about giving people time and also the production quality on this one is kind of questionable. I saw people on Twitter kind of roasting the birds that are stationary in the background and also the rock in that wig is just like taking me out. The whole thing feels like a marketing campaign, reviving a legacy time. And we're in an era where everything is getting reproduced and remanufactured. Everything feels like derivative to us. Reheating your own nachos, not even bussin. Meanwhile, you have really low risk investments like the movie Obsession that only cost about $1 million to make. And it has grossed nearly $500 million. It just feels like Hollywood is sitting in boardrooms going like, hmm, what animated movies made hundreds of millions. Live action remake. The Moana story. And I think that it's great that there's specific Islander representation on screen for kids to see. The production wasn't done justice by Disney executives and it kind of looks like AI. Which is why it isn't landing as well.
