Industry reports citing Federal Energy Regulatory Commission data show the combined capacity of these facilities exceeded 50 gigawatts by the end of 2025, enough to power roughly 37.5 million households, or more than a quarter of all housing units in the country. That growth has been driven in large part by hyperscale operators such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, each of which has continued to announce new sites even as some analysts project that nearly half of the data centers originally planned to open in 2026 will face delays or cancellations tied to supply chain bottlenecks in electrical components.
