What is a data center? Explain it like you're 5. Well, let's go on a trip. Papa, where are we? We are in a data center. Papa, I can't hear you. Well, it's pretty loud in here because of all the computers. Here, put these magic headphones on. Where are the computers? I don't see any computers. No, look around you. See all these machines? These are all computers, except they don't have a computer screen or a keyboard or a mouse. When we want an image from ChatGPT, our computer at home talks to this computer. This computer makes the image and sends it back. It can do all that without a screen. Papa, it's cold. Well, see, these computers, they're always on. They're always making images for people or responding to people's AI questions. So they're always running and they get really hot. See over there at the end of the row? That's a giant air conditioner. So they blow in cold air all the time and they're trying to keep the computers cooler. Remember that noise that's there when you don't have your magic headphones on? Those are the fans of the computer. So the fans, each computer has a fan that's gonna suck in this cold air from the cold aisle, and then it blows the hot air out into a hot aisle. It's just like our computer at home. The noise that you hear, it's the fan. Then the hot air in the hot aisle is sucked out of the building. Papa, what's this? This is the big air conditioner. And see all these pipes? Water is really good at transferring heat. Papa, I heard the guy on the news talking about how much water data centers use. Yes, but that's not here. This water isn't really used up. It just goes in a loop to cool down the air conditioner. And because the water goes in a loop, it's not really used up here. Papa, but look, there's this big, big, really big thing of water. Yes, this water is used in a different cycle. To keep the air conditioners inside really cool, you also need to transfer heat to this hot water loop, and that's the loop that goes outside. But look at the way that the hot water loop gets rid of its heat. The hot water is dripped down over here and that exposes it to the air outside. The heat from the hot water is going into the air, but also the water is evaporating. Do you know what that word means? Yeah, Papa, I know. Water goes into the air. So that's how the water gets used up. That's right. So this whole building is full of computers? That's right, and it's basically how we have the internet and how we have AI. So a data center is just computers and air conditioners? Yep, that sounds about right.
