Medical Laboratory Scientists ...

A few years ago I actually asked myself a very difficult question that if I keep doing exactly what I'm doing today as a medical laboratory scientist, where will I be in the next five or 10 years? I love the laboratory and I still do. But I also realized that experience alone isn't enough. If we don't intentionally grow, we become comfortable. And when we are comfortable, we stop preparing for the opportunities that are waiting for us in the future. And that's when I made a decision. That I wasn't going to stop at being a clinical chemist, but I wanted to become something more. I wanted to become someone who could improve laboratory quality, strengthen laboratory systems, lead teams and help healthcare organizations achieve excellence. So I invested in myself. I became an ISO 9001 lead implementor, then an ISO 9001 lead auditor. I learned about quality management system and laboratory management systems. Those decisions completely changed the kind of opportunities that came my way. Today I work in laboratory medicine, but I also train professionals. I lead quality improvement initiatives. I consult. I also speak at conferences, webinars, trainings and I mentor other medical laboratory scientists. That's what beyond the bench is really all about. It's not leaving the profession is becoming more valuable within the profession. And that's why I created the Beyond the Bench Career Masterclass Series.
