This is a scary situation for a lot of people, especially depending upon what medication you take. I'm Dr. Bayo, I'm a board-certified family medicine physician and health advocate. If you realize that you accidentally threw away or forgot your medication at home while you're on vacation, here are a few tips that can help. The first thing, it's important to know that skipping your medication can be very dangerous, especially if you stop it suddenly. So the first thing you wanna do is call your doctor's office and say, "I'm traveling, and I forgot my medication. Can you call in an emergency supply to a pharmacy near where I'm staying?" The other thing you can do is reach out to your pharmacy and ask them to transfer your medication to the nearest pharmacy. Sometimes they're gonna be willing to do an emergency vacation refill. Now, if neither of these work, the other thing you can do that most people don't realize is you can find the nearest urgent care. Sometimes that clinician will be willing to prescribe a short supply of the medication you're taking. Now, there's one important exception. If you're taking a controlled substance, that medication may have very strict refill rules, and this may require a different plan. So reaching out to your prescribing clinician and pharmacy as soon as possible is so important.
