this has to be one of the coolest beauty treatments that my mom and I have ever tried and it's a type of heat therapy called an enzyme bath where you get completely buried in this warm soft mixture that looks like dirt but it actually feels really nice and it's amazing for your body this type of heat therapy originated in Japan but it's becoming super popular in Korea these days so we came to one of the only places in Seoul that offers this treatment it's located in a women's only spa in the middle of Gangnam and this place is huge they have everything from dry wet sauna to body scrub massages and of course enzyme baths which is what we're doing today so you're first taken into this private room with these big wooden tubs filled with a soft dirt looking mixture and after taking off your clothes they basically cover you completely completely up to your neck and this warm fluffy mixture and it feels so soft you guys once you're in there it's really hot you guys you'll start sweating kind of like you're in a sauna but that's actually the whole point of the enzyme bath so this is actually not dirt it's actually a plant material made of herbs like mugwort and rice bran which is what gives it that brown color and the coolest part is that they use zero heaters to heat this up it's actually all natural basically the spa keeps a living culture of microbes in the mixture and they feed it with fresh rice bran and mugwort every single day and as the microbes break everything down it creates a lot of heat inside and that natural heat is what makes your body super warm it's basically the same idea as a sourdough starter but instead of creating gas it creates heat I asked one of the ladies how they clean this because obviously I don't wanna bury in other people's sweat but they said that the microbes also break down the sweat and body oils which is how it stays clean as long as they're constantly feeding it and taking care of it and once we were done with this they had us go to the outdoor shower to rinse and wash our bodies and afterwards our skin felt so I thought our appointment ended here but you can actually use the entire facility so we also went to the other saunas to sweat a little more and of course we had to grab eggs and 식혜 to have that full Korean spa experience and we just relaxed there the entire night while doing our sheet masks and overall it was a 10/10 experience that I would definitely do again when I'm in Korea
