I didn't realize how much damage
a puddle jumper truly could do...
until I experienced it
my daughter could
save her own life
at 6 months old
she could at
9 months old
she could at
14 months old
she even could at
18 months old
what do you think happens
the next time she jumps in
(Or falls in) and doesn't have
that puddle jumper on
She needs air...
So she goes
to the position
she's been practicing
the float is gone
the practiced
response is gone
What's left?
Panic.
Confusion.
Now we have
to reteach
the skill she
had already mastered.
I could literally see
the confusion on her
face
I was only trying to put her closer
to big sister (who did ISR and could
fully swim by 3) but I was actually
pushing her progress
further from her
Her ISR instructor immediately
asked if we had been using
a puddle jumper.
She didn't shame me.
She said something
that stuck with me...
"I could show you pictures from
before I became an instructor,
of my own kids in puddle jumpers
after they did ISR.
Once we know better,
we do better."
We just completed another
ISR session and Maddie
finally got her float back
We spent these weeks
relearning skills she
had already mastered.
Now we know better.
We'll do better.
See you next session,
Mrs. Nicole!💙

I threw out the puddle jumper.
I will only ever use a properly
fitted, coast guard approved,
life jacket: in dark water, on a boat,
or open water.
I will use pool
time to practice
ISR skills, and
give my daughter
the space to use them.
