Everyone says "just self-host it" like the hard part is over. On what? But nobody ever tells you what to run it on. Is it in a rack? It was never this: a rack, or a server room, or a data centre. It's really just one computer in your house that never switches off. Just a computer that stays on, never gets switched off. So which computer? People will argue about specs for hours, but honestly, it all comes down to three things. It comes down to three things: Energy, it runs day and night. The work, what you want to run. And where from, cheapest first. Energy it uses. Work you need. And where you actually get it. Energy comes first because this thing is running day and night. So an old tower burning 70 watts around the clock is costing you nearly 200 euros a year, and a little office desktop will do the same work on 15, which the cheapest machine to buy can quietly cost you the most to keep. The work comes second because you probably want something like Jellyfin for your films or image for your photos. And here's that's actually worth knowing, because there are two kinds of chip out there called ARM and x86. A Raspberry Pi is ARM and most desktops are x86. But these days that barely matters because Docker packages nearly everything for both of them. So a Pi really does work, and it's only a few heavy jobs that still want an x86 desktop. And then there's where you get it, because this is the part where people overspend. The cheapest machine is the one already sitting in your house. Costs you nothing to start. So start with that. And after that, it's those tiny office desktops that companies replace by the thousand. They go for about 100 euros. You can even email a local business and ask where their old ones end up, because they need them gone and you need one. The one honest catch is that second hand, no warranty comes with no warranty. But get those three, the whole thing runs for about 40 euros a year. So next time somebody tells you to just self-hosted, you'll know the machine was out there all along.
