Here is the timeline you should be following: You should be playing these pieces on the piano. Not you are behind. By year one, done with any and all beginner method books. By year two, be playing fast etudes like Czerny's School of Velocity. By year three, many students can already play advanced repertoire like Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven sonatas. And by year four, you should be able to play some Chopin etudes. And look, if you stay this long, that this is terrible advice because forcing yourself onto arbitrary timelines doesn't just hurt your confidence, but give you injuries that haunt a lifetime, like tendonitis, carpal tunnel, tennis elbow. They come from pressure that doesn't need to exist, physical and mental. And look, every student develops differently, right? Just because someone can play Chopin etudes after three years on the piano doesn't make them more of a musician than someone who builds up to this over a decade. And look, if you really need a timeline, it took me over 20 years to get to the point I am right now. And I know that I still have so much to learn. If you see any timelines on social media, they're not real. No timeline is. But injuries, they sure are something encouraging to say to a fellow musician. Drop it in the comments.
