Now remember, Bach never wrote for or played the modern piano here. He played on the harpsichord and clavichord, which are instruments and played on early versions of the fortepiano where dynamics worked very differently. Like playing loudly is excited or playing softly is being sad. And while that is a part of music, dynamics can also just be a tool. Or four-part fugue, for example. These are pieces made up of conversations happening between different and independent voices. And because there's all these independent and simultaneous lines, we need to decide in our brains the hierarchy of voices to listen to. We have tools to make certain lines stand out. The first obvious one is dynamics. If I want the answer to stand out, I make it louder. But in Baroque music, we can use articulation. For example, a more sustained note creates more emphasis than a shorter, detached one. And so here's the point, even if you're not playing Baroque music, you don't need to think about dynamics as just an emotional choice. At its core, dynamics are just a tool, one of the most important tools a pianist has. And that's what piano on the piano forces you to learn, not just how to play, but rather how to organize sound and get the ear to listen to what we want it to focus on.
