Claude cannot open the internet. It never could, and knowing that changes how you use it. When you see "searching the web" on screen, the model isn't doing that. The model does exactly one thing: it reads text and writes text back. No hands, no connection to anything. So what happens when you ask about today's weather in Amsterdam? It doesn't know, because it was trained months ago. But it knows a search tool exists, because the application told it. So it writes a small note that says run web_search, query "Amsterdam weather right now." Nothing has happened yet. That note is just text. The note lands in Claude's infrastructure, which is ordinary software running on real servers, and that software can make requests like any other program. It runs the search, turns the results back into plain text, and hands it to the model. The model reads it, picks out twenty-one degrees and cloudy, and writes your answer. Read, write, read, write. That's the whole loop, and every tool works this way — your calendar, your CRM, your files. Which explains three things. Why it makes things up when it has no tool to reach for. TWO MINUTES NO JARGON CHANGES HOW YOU USE IT // WHY BOTHER KNOWING THIS Once you see the actual loop, half the things that confuse people about AI stop being confusing. START HERE The Model Does Exactly One Thing It reads text. It writes text back. That is the whole capability, and there is nothing else underneath it. It cannot open a connection Not to a website, not to your email, not to anything. It has no hands. It can write a request And something else, listening, can go and do it. Everything clever you have seen it do is built on top of those two moves and nothing else. A REAL EXAMPLE "What Is the Weather in Amsterdam?" It does not know It was trained months ago. Today's weather was not in there. But it knows a tool exists Because the application told it so, in the same way it told it everything else. That second point is the whole trick. It is not searching. It is asking for a search. STEP ONE It Writes a Note // what the model actually produces run: web_search query: "Amsterdam weather right now" // and that is all it produces Nothing has happened yet. That note is just text sitting there, the same as any other sentence it writes. STEP TWO Ordinary Software Does the Work MODEL writes note APP runs search APP returns text The note lands in Claude's infrastructure, which is normal software on real servers. It can make requests like any other program, so it does. // THEN BACK THE OTHER WAY Whatever comes back gets turned into plain text and handed to the model as part of the conversation.
