Things that shocked me at my second Canadian cottage 🇨🇦 The weekend almost didn't happen Our original cottage cancelled at the last minute. After I mentioned it online, one of my followers incredibly offered us his cottage for the weekend ❤️ 1. A 'cottage' can feel like an actual home I still imagine cottages as tiny, rustic cabins. Then you arrive and find full kitchens, beautiful interiors and enough room for everyone to stay together. 2. The grocery shop is part of the experience Everyone gets strangely excited choosing snacks, drinks and meals for the weekend. I bought Dunkaroos for the first time which felt like another Canadian rite of passage 🇨🇦 3. The journey there becomes part of the weekend You don't just drive directly to the cottage. You stop in a small town, get lunch, wander around and slowly leave city life behind. Our stop was Parry Sound 4. Life immediately starts revolving around the lake Morning coffee beside it. Lunch overlooking it. Swimming, talking and watching the sunset beside it. 5. Apparently everyone in Canada can swim in a lake except me 😭 Canadians enter dark lake water with absolutely no hesitation. Meanwhile I'm wearing a life jacket and wondering what might be touching my feet 😭 6. Cottage weekends make everyone feel like a child again Swimming, running around outside, eating snacks all day and losing track of the time 🕰️ 7. Every meal tastes better outside It could be the exact same food you make at home but cook it on a barbecue beside a Canadian lake and suddenly it feels like the greatest meal of your life. 8. Dinner becomes the main event Nobody is rushing away or staring at the clock. Everyone helps make the food, sits around the table and stays there talking long after dinner is finished. 9. Canadians will light a fire even after eating a full dinner There is always room for s'mores. I'm beginning to understand that the campfire is less about being hungry and more about keeping the night going 🔥 10. Everyone naturally gathers for sunset Nobody officially organizes it. One person notices the sky, someone calls the others over and then the whole group is outside watching together 🌅 11. The simplest moments become the ones you remember Not a big attraction or carefully planned activity just friends in different corners of the cottage, shouting to each other while the sun disappeared over the lake I think I finally understand why cottages mean so much to Canadians They aren't really about the building. They're about slowing down, being together and creating the kinds of memories people talk about for years.
