I avoid standing in the parking lot to buckle my kids. Not because I'm paranoid, but I'm closing opportunities for bad things to happen. Situational awareness is a way of life for us. It's not a hard rule — some spots are safer than others, and sometimes it's unavoidable. But when I have a choice, I choose to close that window. As a mom to 4 kids under 7 who refuses to stay home while he's working, I've spent years working on a system that builds safety into our routine without adding unnecessary stress.
