We gotta talk about the sea muppets. Scientists just learned that these are ever seen one. No one has ever seen one. But they are a real fish. They may look like seahorses. That's a seahorse. This is a... There are three species that we know of. The helmet head sea muppet, the most recently discovered. The paradoxical sea muppet, and the bull neck sea muppet. The genus is represented by seven specimens that were all brought up from the sea floor by dredgers on accident. Kind of left in museums. They thought they were seahorses, but again, this is a seahorse. Sea muppet seahorses. Sea muppet seahorses. Lineage. They have evolved the brood pouch. Male ends up giving birth. They have long prehensile tails that help them grab onto the grasses they hide within. They don't have armor. Seahorses are essentially a type of an extreme body plan, evolving from a more like a pipe fish that swims vertically while looking forward. And the newly discovered muppet fish is essentially another lineage of fish that evolved convergently for the same, and as a result from the look a lot like seahorses. Because there were so few specimens, you can't really dissect them because, like, the entire specimen at that point had really studied these too much. This new team did microCT scanning so they could see what the bones looked like within, how they first got the clues that these actually seahorses. DNA confirmed what the anatomy was hinting at. This group, these muppet fish, they are not a part of we call seahorses. They are a cousin that look... Lost Species.
