The government announced that they're scrapping the Lifetime ISA and replacing it with the First Time Buyers ISA. So why is Martin Lewis encouraging anyone age 18 to 39 to just open one and that that could be summed up with one word: OPTIONS. So right now we know that the Lifetime ISA is scheduled to close new applicants around April 2028, following a government consultation. And once the ISA is replaced, it is gone for good. So by opening one with just £1, you do have to start saving thousands. It simply keeps options available to you if you decide to use your Lifetime ISA in the future. While I don't think that the Lifetime ISA has been a great product for buying homes particularly with the cap on the property purchase and the property prices over the last couple of years, it still has its benefits, particularly when it comes to retirement. One being that you can deposit up to £4,000 per tax year and the government adds a 25% bonus up to £1,000 annually on your contributions. And yes, there are still some caveats around a Lifetime ISA, particularly with the penalty back, which is opening just gives you the option to not use. You can simply close the Lifetime ISA, but once the Lifetime ISA is gone, it is gone for good.
