Should you open a Lifetime ISA? Not financial advice. Lifetime ISA rules: • 18-39 to open an account • buy first home / retirement • deposit up to £4k every tax year • 25% government bonus of that £1,000 a year Alternatively, you can use it for retirement. Deposit up to £4,000 every tax year and the government will give you a 25% boost of that there. So if you maxed out, you'd get £1,000 a year. However, this account has been criticized for its withdrawal penalty, but the government says existing account holders will still be able to use this account under the current rules. So Martin Lewis has said put £1 in a Lifetime ISA if you have the small inkling that you might use it to buy a home. And that's because when they introduce this new first time buyer ISA, they may stop people opening new Lifetime ISAs, but if you already have an account, it means the option is there. The other benefit to opening an account with £1? If you do decide to use it to buy your first home, the account has to be open 12 months prior. First time buyer ISA. It will not have the option to be used for retirement. It won't have the same withdrawal penalty, but it may have other limitations. So in my opinion, lifetime ISA open is a smart move. But fully funding it would be a completely different decision and you have to read the terms and conditions carefully.
