My Ex had "moved on" from the relationship even while we were discussing the bride price list. It's on a Monday, in the second week of January, 2021. Pretty much a hot evening (clocking past 7 pm). I had just returned from work, still sweaty and fagged out - Lagos traffic dealt me a heavy blow that evening. As I was to hit the bathroom, my phone rang and it's her! We hadn't spoken for about three weeks - cos of a misunderstanding (that she caused). I picked the phone and stared for a few seconds. First thing that rushed through my mind, "hmmm...this one you're calling me today, you finally want to apologize." So, I picked - with this hyped ego. Her voice sounded differently than usual. This time, much softer and calmer. She proceeds..."Good evening." I responded, reluctantly and also expectantly. Next thing I heard, "not to waste any time. I called to inform you that I'll be getting married in March." This time, her voice sounded loud and unconcerned. I had to pretend like I didn't hear her. "You said...?" I asked to be reassured. She repeated it and followed it up with "hope you can move on now. Take care of yourself." I was still trying to find words to respond an she hung up! After some minutes, I grabbed myself and headed to the bathroom, showered, came out and headed to the fridge. Brought out my Egusi soup, took out the portion I needed, warmth the soup and fufu, then went back to the parlour. After dismantling the fufu with an unexplained anger, I got my mind back. What really is happening? I thought within, hoping some answers would pop up, but got none. In December of 2020, I had collected marriage list from this lady. We were studying the list to see what to strike out, and I was hoping to travel in April for her bride price... What happened? What changed? Was she just playing a prank...different thoughts were flowing and clashing inside my head. My mind became busier than Oshodi park - too much movement of thoughts. My heart pounded heavily. I picked my phone to call her. It rang 5 different times and she didn't pick. Went to WhatsApp and dropped her a message. Double strikes but not read... reality started setting in. The next morning, I called and she picked. "Ok, let's hope it's a prank you played on me last night, Goody." I stuttered to say: It wasn't a prank, she answered boldly. Then she went on to narrate with, a little more details, the entire story. She started seeing this dude since October. And in just 4 months, they had gotten married. After her short, we ended the call. And I wen back to reminisce the last stage of our relationship. Sorry guy.
