THIS SKYSCRAPER IS SECRETLY A TEMPLE Most people have no idea. This Houston skyscraper was modeled after a Mayan pyramid. This is Heritage Plaza, downtown Houston. Architect Mohammed Nasr designed it in the 1980s, right after a trip to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, where he stood in front of the pyramids at Chichen Itza. He came home and put that same step design on top of a Houston skyscraper. That crown is a direct nod to El Castillo, the great Mayan pyramid, sitting 53 stories above downtown Houston.
