Explaining BOTH Sides of the trans women in sports debate ✨ for educational purposes ✨ here's everything you need to know why now why is everyone talking about this right now obviously it's been a debate for years but over the last 18 months since trump signed an executive order that interprets title 9 in a way that bans trans women from women's school sports everyone has had an opinion this dominoed into the ncaa changing its policy and the olympics changing their policy and basically became a whole thing Credit: Greg Latza/ACLU Trans people belong in sports Trans kids are kids Protect Trans Kids finally in june the supreme court ruled that states can now ban trans women and girls from participating in sports under title 9 but didn't require them to do so recently sophie cunningham who was known as maga barbie to wnba fans gave her opinion on the issue saying that trans girls should not participate in women's sports and that we should protect women and blah blah blah sophie's comments even led to a rally a pro sophie cunningham rally before one of her games and a lot of criticism from other people RILEY GAINES with A.J. GREGORY SWIMMING AGAINST THE CURRENT and a lot of criticism from other people FIGHTING FOR COMMON SENSE IN A WORLD THAT'S LOST ITS MIND sophie follows riley gaines on instagram who tied for fifth with a trans girl and has made it her mission to get trans girls out of sports FIGHTING FOR COMMON SENSE IN A WORLD THAT'S LOST ITS MIND please pause and read this book cover because this sent me i know i'm supposed to be being unbiased right now but i'm going to tell you the strongest version of both arguments so you can form your own opinion and then i'm gonna tell you mine people who support restricting trans women from women's sports argue that male puberty comes with physical advantages that last like height men are "typically" taller than women bone density or strength or cardiovascular endurance due to having bigger lungs like there are things that make men after puberty physically stronger than women they believe that is the reason that women's sports exist as a category to eliminate those biological differences between men and women and create fairness they worry that while hormone therapy you go through when you transition might reduce some of these advantages there's no way to know if it eliminates them entirely and so it's not fair to have "biological men" competing for scholarships prize funds and just wins and merit and they also argue that in contact sports it might be unsafe or make women feel uncomfortable in locker rooms they also argue that clear eligibility rules like if you weren't born a woman you can't participate in women's sports are easier to apply consistently than any other solution people who support trans women being able to participate in women's sports say that the science is a lot more complicated than the headlines may suggest they don't deny that biology matters they just don't support blanket bans a lot of the differences largely disappear when you adjust to body size and a lot of the studies that we have available on this topic rarely analyze elite athletes also hormone therapy changes the body significantly especially when it happens before puberty so treating all cases the same just doesn't make sense sports are tied to belonging especially for kids and trans kids are already such a high risk group when it comes to mental health issues i don't wanna say the s word because i don't want my video to get taken down so taking sports away already makes them more vulnerable and the biggest argument is that the scale doesn't match the alarm like there's this huge push to "protect girls" but there's only about 10 trans athletes in the entire ncaa out of over half a million meaning 0.00002% of the ncaa are trans athletes lastly if they start any sort of gender testing or hormone testing or worse genital testing on women in sports and they have to do it to that's extremely expensive and extensive and they're not gonna do that but if they start deciding who they're gonna test how are they gonna decide who they think is trans who they think is more masculine who they think has unfair advantages and that disproportionately affects black and brown women because we are already seen as more masculine critics argue that because there are so few trans athletes in the united states the threat to women's safety and the threat to women's sports is largely hypothetical and that maybe if the actual goal here is to protect women in sports we should be focusing on issues that are more prevalent in women's sports like the abuse that young girls experience in women's sports and the underfunding of women's sports under marketing unequal pay things like that problems that affect all female athletes so now that you know most of the facts i'm not saying that i gave a perfect account but i think i did okay let know your opinion in the comments and in my next video i'll give you my opinion
