I recently made two ladybugs out of paper mache. This species is called a seven-spotted ladybug. I love to sculpt with recycled materials. My favorite cardboard to use is the cardboard that comes from food boxes called chipboard. Next, I do a good layer of paper mache to smooth everything out and then joint compound which I sand as smooth as I can possibly get it. I painted it with acrylic paint and then did a nice glossy clear coat to protect it and make it super shiny. I really like the Liquidtex gloss coat. I started making sculptures of insects because my older son wants to be an entomologist.
