I don’t think camping just teaches us how to live outdoors. I think it teaches us how to live at home. We just spent 24 hours in North Devon and one of the reasons I love camping is that it reminds me we need far less than we think. Life becomes surprisingly simple. You use what you need and nothing more. One bottle, one pan, the same jumper two days in a row, and even brushing your teeth. You only take the water you need because when you’re camping, you’re a little more mindful of the water you have. I only recently learned there’s actually a name for this: Wild Brushing. And I think the outdoors has a way of changing our perspective. Maybe the outdoors isn’t just somewhere we escape to, maybe it’s somewhere we learn from. And maybe the best way to bring a little more of the outdoors home is by carrying these small habits with us. Using only what we need and wasting a little less. Even something as simple as turning off the tap when we brush our teeth.
