We’re definitely not professional groomers, but after grooming Rusty quite a few times, this is the process that works best for us and keeps his coat looking fluffy and healthy. Plus, it saves us a good amount of money and it’s just cool to know how to care for your dog’s coat. For his shampoo and leave-in conditioner, we love the Chris Christensen Pro-Line Fair Advantage Premium Volumizing Shampoo and Pro-Line Pro-Gro Premium Skin & Coat Conditioner. For the conditioner, make sure you dilute it with water until it’s more liquid for the spray bottle! One thing to note: both are scented, so if you or your pup is sensitive to fragrances, these might not be the best option. As always, we recommend doing a patch test first to make sure your pup tolerates the products well. It also took about 4–5 grooms before we really started noticing some of Rusty’s waves fading into a nice, flat coat. How to groom a Golden Retriever Do you know how to groom your golden retriever? If not, we'll show you how. The first step is having the right tools. Because we live in an apartment, we use a local self grooming business that has bathing stations, high velocity dryers, brushes and towels. For shampoo we bring our own, but that's just because we're extra. Details in caption! The first step in blowing out Rusty's coat is to use a round nozzle. We're not too worried about how his coat looks here because the main goal is getting as much water out as possible. You'll know you're done when they're about 80% dry. Next, our secret weapon. Dilute with water to create a spray! Leave in conditioner. This will really bring out the softness and shine to their coat. We cover his feathers, tail and pants. And then Rusty's favourite part. Roob it in. Switch the round nozzle to a flat nozzle. Now comes the longest process, but the most important. Lay the coat angle the flat nozzle away from your dog and slowly move up their back. The goal here is to train the coat to lay flat and work out the cowlicks. It's almost like brushing their coat over and over again. Rusty's back used to be really wavy, but we've been able to train it to lay flat. It takes a few grooms to really train the coat and see the results. Use the same methods for their pants and tail. And be sure to check for wet spots with the double coat. That can Make the waves come back. We'll give Rusty breaks from the blow dryer and brush his coat. Another way to remind the hair which way we want it to lay. This is a great example of what a difference the process makes. You can see the fur on his pants not only straighten out, but fluff up just the way we want. For the chest floofs, you'll want to angle the nozzle down towards their paws and sweep up to the chin. Keep their head up if possible. Don't forget to give lots of treats and at the end, a really big hug. Voila! It might not be perfect, but it saves money and is great bonding time.
