I think one of the dumbest popular arguments made is investing in a Roth IRA isn't a great idea. Wow, at this moment, the maximum amount you're allowed to contribute to it is $7,500. That translates to $625 a month. Now, every couple years or so, this number goes up. So as time goes on, you're going to be able to contribute more. Let's just say the number stayed right where it's at, $625 a month is the max you can do and you started maxing your Roth IRA from 20 years old to 60. Now, I expect a 10% rate of return, which is completely realistic. You can go do your research on the history of the S&P 500. Starting at 20, you would have about $4 million at 60 years old, completely tax-free. Now, obviously, this is not a get-rich-quick type of thing. A lot of people love to say, what am I going to do with millions when I'm 60 years old? To mention that to begin with, that's probably going to be the time you're going to want money the most in your life. Most likely at that time, you're going to have a family and you're going to value the time you spend with them more than anything else. Last thing you're going to want to be worried about is how you're going to pay your bills and if you need to work. Aside from that, I can definitely relate. I don't want to wait until I'm 60 years old to make my first million dollars. And I'm not going to. And neither do you. The point is this is just $625 a month. If you're someone who thinks like that, I just want to ask you, what is the alternative you're going to do with the money? Do you think there are few exceptions, let's just say that's the only money you can spare after all your bills and you've tried to budget as hard as you can. And you're 100% locked in on wanting to start a business and you actually need the money to start it. Maximize your income as long as you can actually do it is always going to be your best friend. And ultimately, once you can get that going, you'll be able to max out your Roth IRA while also having more money coming in. But overall, out of all the options out there of what you could be doing with your money when you're young, $625 a month is definitely up there with one of the best places you can put it. For those of you that are using the excuse, I don't want money when I'm older, I want it now. 99% chance that $625 a month isn't going to be the difference between you doing that or not doing it. Investing your Roth IRA should just be the bare minimum you're doing to set yourself up for the future.
