I really think that having $100,000 is the most dangerous amount of money you can have when you're so young. To start, I'm not saying $100,000 isn't a lot of money. It definitely is, especially if you're young. We could even look at the statistics here. Fewer than 1% of people between the ages of 18 and 21 have accomplished this goal. However, I think at this number, especially when you're young, it feels like a lot more money than it actually is. A lot of people have this mindset when they first start making money that once they hit their first $100,000, they're going to be in a great spot. I personally remember when I hit my first $100,000, I was 18 years old and I felt like I was the most successful guy in my entire town. Of course, just to be clear though, like obviously I know there's levels to this, but when you're 18, it feels pretty good. But back to the main point, you start to feel comfortable and like you can mess around a bit. As I was coming up to that number, I remember thinking as soon as I hit that goal, I'm going to buy my first Rolex and overall just like the generic stuff of how I'm going to inflate my lifestyle. The thing is, I promise you, you can blow through $100,000 so fast. And looking at it through the 4% rule, that's only $4,000 a year. $100,000 should not be a milestone where your lifestyle is all of a sudden going to have all these improvements. The first $100,000 should mark the point where your investments are going to actually do some noticeable compounding now. When you reach that point, it's okay to reward yourself. Obviously, it's a pretty big milestone when you first hit it. However, don't go too crazy. Stay on the same path, keep the same habits, and overall, if you can continue to do that, you're going to reach that next $100,000 way faster than you would ever think. It took me two years to make my first $100,000, then less than six months later, I hit my second $100,000. This is all because I decided I'm not going to act like I'm rich, I'm not going to crazily inflate my lifestyle. I'm just going to stick to the same habits that got me to this first $100,000 and let compounding grab my hand to get me to the second.
