about half the public schools in America are secretly giving your kid a risk score, a number used to predict how likely they are to hurt themselves or commit a crime. The company is called Go Guardian. Go Guardian is a student monitoring tool that watches over students across ten thousand schools, but what it does exactly, and how well it works, isn't easy for students to know. To learn more about its functionality, accuracy, and impact on students, we filed dozens of public records requests and analyzed tens of thousands of results from the software. Using data from multiple schools in both red and blue states, what we uncovered was that, by design, Go Guardian is a red flag machine—its false positives heavily outweigh its ability to accurately determine whether the content of a site is harmful. This results in tens of thousands of students being flagged for viewing content that is not only benign, but often, educational or informative. It runs on the school Google account that a kid signs into. It's watching. That most parents don't clock. As long as logged into that school profile, it's watching. That means in class, on the bus, at 9 at night. It logs their searches, their location, everything they type into a profile attached. A kid followed everywhere, graded on the odds that they'll do something wrong. And most of the time the time the told about it. Minority Report imagined a world that arrested you for a crime committed yet based off of prediction. We built a softer version of that and then pointed it at 12-year-olds. Companies like this are the exact motivation behind the project I'm building called Paranoia. It scores every company based off how much of your privacy and data they give away. The fine print but never read. And it's all the receipts to prove it in just one place. Link in bio. You can check it out through the link in my bio, but as always, think about it.
