GoGuardian: A student monitoring tool that watches over students across ten thousand schools. It logs student activity, searches, location, and what they type, then compiles it into a profile with a risk score. This risk score is used to predict how likely students are to hurt themselves or commit a crime. It flags students for viewing content that is not only benign, but often educational or informative. It also monitors students' online activity and can block sites. It runs on the school Google account that a kid signs into. It is used by schools to proactively monitor primarily middle and high school students, giving schools access to an enormous amount of sensitive student data which the company can also access. It can view student webcam footage without their consent. It has inaccurately mischaracterized student behavior as dangerous or even outed students to their families. It tracks trends in student search histories. It identifies supposedly "at risk" students and gathers location data on where and when a device is being used, allowing anyone with access to the data to create a comprehensive profile of the student. It flags students for mundane activity, and sends alerts to school officials, parents, and potentially, police. It can also set up "alerts" for when a student is viewing "offensive" content. It can prevent students from viewing it. These flags and filters can be applied to all students, or individualized for specific students and allow administrators to view detailed information about students that could follow them for the rest of their lives. It is a "God Mode" tool for school administrators. It is a softer version of Minority Report, pointed at 12-year-olds. It is the exact motivation behind the project I'm building called Paranoia. It scores every company based off how much of your privacy and data they give away. It is the fine print that you agree to but never read.
