4 THINGS YOU PROBABLY DON'T KNOW ABOUT METALLICA
they recruited their bassist by mistake. hetfield heard this insane shredding solo and went hunting for the amazing guitar player behind it. turned out it wasn't a guitar at all, it was cliff burton playing bass. they were so stunned they recruited him on the spot.
their original lead guitarist was dave mustaine, who they fired in 1983 right before their first album. he went home on a bus, formed megadeth out of pure revenge, and turned it into one of the biggest metal bands ever. metallica basically created their own rival by accident.
on the album ...And Justice for All, you can barely hear the bass at all. it's one of the most famous production decisions in metal, the bass is buried so low it's almost gone. it was their first album after losing cliff burton, which makes the missing bass feel even heavier.
and the saddest one. in 1986 the band drew cards for the nicer tour bus bunks. cliff burton drew the ace of spades and won the bunk he wanted. that night the bus crashed in sweden and he was thrown through that exact window. he was 24. the card that won him the bed is the one that took his life.
