A CHILDHOOD PROMISE MADE THIS BAND FAMOUS, THEN COST THEM A FORTUNE. skid row's guitarist dave "snake" sabo grew up a few streets from a kid named jon bon jovi. they were best friends and both wanted to be rock stars. as teenagers they made a handshake deal: whoever made it big first would reach back and pull the other one up. bon jovi made it first, and he actually kept the promise. he took skid row on tour as his opening act and helped get them a record deal. for an unknown band, it was the golden ticket. their childhood pact literally came true. but there was a catch. in return, skid row signed their publishing rights over to a company owned by bon jovi and richie sambora. so when their debut album exploded to five times platinum, with "18 and life" and "i remember you," a huge chunk of that money went straight to bon jovi. that's where the friendship cracked. sambora eventually gave his share back to the band. bon jovi kept his, and it caused a rift that lasted decades, especially with singer sebastian bach. the handshake that made them stars is the same one that poisoned the whole thing. success came at the cost of the friendship behind it.
