Malaysia’s East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) is now around 95% complete and could begin operations as early as December 2026, one month ahead of schedule, with the first phase connecting Kota Bharu to Gombak in about four hours instead of a roughly seven-hour drive. Before opening, the trains must complete an 8,000-kilometre Fault-Free Run to test signalling, power, communications and safety systems. While many people see ECRL mainly as a passenger railway, a major part of its value is freight: the project includes 11 passenger trains and 12 electric freight locomotives, eventually linking East Coast businesses to Kuantan Port and Port Klang for faster access to international trade routes. The 665-kilometre line also includes 41 tunnels, the Genting Tunnel as Malaysia’s longest railway tunnel, and 28 wildlife crossings.
