Evil & calculated things I've done to come off as more professional as a teenage girl. I'm talking about things that genuinely helped me walk into rooms where I'm easily the youngest person there and not immediately get treated like a child. Number one, I stopped introducing myself with disclaimers. This is so subtle, but I realized I used to constantly expose my own insecurity before anyone else even had the chance to question me. See, "I don't have that much experience, but..." "this might be a stupid idea, but" literally, why am I arguing against myself? If someone asks me what I do, I just say what I do. If I'm working on a product, I say I'm working on a product. I say I'm leading the project. Obviously you don't lie about your experience, but you also don't need to hand someone a list of reasons not to take you seriously. Number two, I learn to say everything 30% shorter. And I'm telling you, this one changed everything, especially in meetings. I noticed that when I was nervous, I tended to over explain because I wanted people to know that I had thought everything through. It actually made me sound less confident. So now I force myself to make a point, give some reasons and stop talking instead of "wait, sorry, I was thinking we could potentially try..." Uh-uh. It's just "I think we should do X because of Y." And I simply shut up and lean back. I do think there's something so powerful about not filling up the silence immediately after you make a point. And the number three. I keep a mental receipt folder. This is probably the most calculated one. Whenever I do something that gets a measurable result, I remember the number, not, "oh, I used to work on social media. I used to be a content creator." "I grew X by Y percent." Not "I helped with this project," "I led X, and the result was Y." Because I realized professional people rarely describe themselves with adjectives. They would just give you evidence and you come to the conclusion yourself. Instead of trying to convince someone that you're ambitious or super capable, you can just casually bring up the result when it's relevant. Basically self glazing, but with citations. I think that's actually the biggest thing that I've learned. Being young doesn't automatically make you sound unprofessional. Constantly reminding everyone of that and trying to prove yourself does.
