If you are a young woman in corporate, you must know these things to survive. And take this from somebody who had to learn the hard way. Number one, and this is a rule that my parents taught me with friends, but it actually applies to corporate as well. And that is a friend to all is a friend to none. A colleague who is all buddy buddy with other colleagues or every colleague, it's not your friend. And that is not somebody that you want to be chit chatting with all the time, okay? You don't wanna share a lot of it personal information. You don't wanna be gossiping about colleagues, bosses, etcetera, etcetera. They're not your friend. Those are the gossipers. Those are the pot stirrers of the office. And I promise you that if you get too comfortable, you will get in trouble. No. Number two, and I'm not telling anybody to be mean, okay? But it is so much easier to enter the corporate world being taken a little bit more seriously or being seen as a little bit more firm before being friendly, okay? I've had so much more success leading with firmness and seriousness as opposed to being super, super friendly and chummy with people. I'll tell you, it is so much easier to gain respect, credibility and keep relationships professional when you lead with a level of seriousness and then become friendlier with time. No. 3, corporate is a performance, okay? Visibility matters. Doesn't matter if you work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If your boss or somebody who has some level of influence with your higher ups does not see the work that you are doing, it does not matter. But the secret is that you don't want it to feel too performative. You don't want it to be too obvious that you are trying to be visible.
