So what does a high school teacher do on the very first week of school? I'm so glad you asked. I thought I would show you guys all the activities and things that I did the first two days of class. Let me show you what I do. This is what the kids saw projected on the board when they walked in. I'm playing music, I'm talking to them as they're walking in. I'm trying to keep it really high energy. And then we took roll. So during roll, I have them say their own name and then I gave them the choice and answer one of the two questions. What is the most useless or random talent that you can do? But if they couldn't think of it, I let them answer what is my favorite condiment? And then we just went around the room. That took 20 to 25 minutes purely of just talking to them, getting to know them, bantering with them. Our first day of class was only 40 minutes. So after this, I ended up just handing out their syllabi. And then I just went through the syllabus on the board with them and talked about all my policies and all that type of stuff. And believe it or not, that brought us all the way to the end. That brought us to the entire first day. That's all I got done in 40 minutes. Then it was day two of class. This is the slide that they saw when they came in. This is my typical day in class, that always shows when kids come in. So they get familiar. My kids also do warm-ups every single day. I wanted them to get in the habit of seeing how warm-ups work. These warm-ups are these student information cards that I have them fill out. I gave them about five to seven minutes while I'm doing this, I'm keeping my class pretty lighthearted. I'm talking to kids, I'm setting the mood. I really want to have a positive and high energy class. And I think that starts from day one. Then we went through roll again. I had them say their name again. I have 170 students. So I need to hear their names like three or four times a period. And then I asked them my favorite question, what is something you are really good at? That was the coolest question. I learned so much about the kids, but I think it was so cool to hear them be proud of something with themselves. This one I went a little faster. I took about 15 minutes. Then we went into a get to know you activity. We did this Starburst activity. Basically, I went through and gave every single kid a Starburst. Then I told them that they're going to have to answer one of these questions depending on what color Starburst they had. As they are thinking about what they're going to answer, I go through and answer each one of these questions. So they get to know me more. My hobbies, my favorite food and drink, my favorite people, and my favorite type of music. Then I had them turn and talk into groups of four or five and tell each other the answers depending on the color Starburst they had. The last thing that we did was create our own name card. I am giving you a small piece of cardstock, on that you will write you name so it takes up the whole card. Then you will have time to color and decorate the card! (needs to be colored) On the BACK of the card: Period [in pencil]. What my goal is, is to take all of these, use them as a border around my back whiteboard. So for example, I could ask, what if I was able to eat this many Chick-fil-A sandwiches? I made them ask two math questions before they started asking the fun questions. If it's odd, if it's even, if it's divisible by three, does the number round up? And then they played with each other. And then we actually had some kids come up on the board. I wrote the number on the board and then they did it in front of the whole class. And it was so much fun. So that is what I did my first couple days of teaching high school. I think my kids had a lot of fun with it. I had a lot of fun with it. That's what I did the first week of school.
