Don't check in to a Marriott without saying these words. I've been a platinum member for two years and I've never gotten an upgrade. That's because you're not saying certain words at the front desk. What do you mean? A former Marriott front desk agent who processed over 100,000 check-ins says 65 to 70% of people who asked politely and had any elite status got an upgrade. The guest who said nothing got whatever the system auto-assigned. Room 3:12 by the elevator. Every time, remember. 60% of the time it works every time. So the only difference was asking 10 seconds of conversation. Here's what you say when you walk up. Hi, I'm checking in under [name]. I'm a [status level] member. Are there any complimentary upgrades or suites available tonight? Politely, specifically, with a smile. That's all it takes. That line alone separated people getting sweets from those stuck by the ice machine. But here's the move most people skip. The hotel's direct property email. Not the 800 number, the actual hotel. You could find it on marriott.com. What do I say in the email? Subject line: Upcoming stay, your date, your confirmation number. Mention your status and tell them you're celebrating something. Anniversary, birthday, honeymoon, whatever it is. Do they actually read those? Every single one. This agent said she arranged birthday cakes, rose petals, champagne setups, and complimentary suite upgrades. All from one email sent the week before. What about the benefits I'm already supposed to get? That's the other thing when you check in. Say this: I want to confirm my platinum benefits. The lounge access, the breakfast, and the late check-out. A lot of agents won't mention those unless you bring them up first. So you literally have to ask for what you've already earned. The system doesn't reward silence. It rewards the person who checks in on the app early, emails the hotel before arrival, says the 10-second script at the desk, confirms their benefits and mentions the occasion. That person gets the suite, the breakfast, the lounge, the champagne, and the late check-out. I've been doing this completely wrong. It's never too late to start.
