Indonesia’s forests are burning. While El Niño might be making this year’s fires worse, that’s not the whole story. Across Sumatra and Borneo, forests have been cleared and peatlands drained to make space for palm oil and pulp plantations. This has made these landscapes more vulnerable to fire. Real prevention means protecting and restoring natural ecosystems.
