Comcast's routers can now track you moving inside your home, and police can get that data without telling you. On August 18, 2026, Comcast launched Xfinity Shield. The free tier comes bundled into Xfinity Internet and carries the headline feature, WiFi Motion. A separate paid tier, Shield Select, runs $15 a month. WiFi Motion uses the radio signal already bouncing between your router and connected devices, like a TV or smart plug, to detect movement. No cameras or audio. It is opt-in, and needs an XB7 gateway or newer. Comcast's terms say it "may disclose information generated by your WiFi Motion to third parties without further notice to you" in a law enforcement investigation. Your household movement can reach police without you ever being told. Comcast says it does not monitor the motion or notifications the service generates, and retains motion activity for up to seven days. The Register noted Comcast does not spell out what other information that covers, or which third parties. Per The Register, Comcast first launched WiFi Motion in 2025 and has now folded it into Xfinity Shield, reaching tens of millions of gateways people already rent. A software layer turned an existing installed base into a sensing network at almost no hardware cost. Nowadays a tool arrives framed as safety or convenience, and the data collection is the part nobody reads. The feature is free, and the record it creates belongs to someone else.
