Fairphone, the ethical alternative to Apple, is now sold directly in the US, for people who want to ditch Big Tech. Fairphone is a Dutch company building phones fair to workers and the planet, and since last month it sells the Gen 6+ direct to Americans for $649. The whole point is you can fix it yourself, since twelve parts swap out with one screwdriver. A battery runs $40 and a screen $90, where Apple charges $99 and $329 on an iPhone, and it comes with a five-year warranty and updates until 2033. Fairphone's phones also come with a five year warranty and update till 2033. Fairphone also says over half the phone is fair or recycled material and their factory workers get a living wage bonus. They also recycle as much e-waste as they sell. They are also a certified B Corp scoring 136 out of 200 on an independent ethics check, all while the average business score is 50. Apple meanwhile has been linked in China to cobalt mining and lobbying to weaken laws against forced labor, as well as privacy concerns and much more. Fairphone isn't quite perfect because it runs on Google's Android and only works with AT&T and T-Mobile as of now. Although they do have a degoogled version with their partner Murena. Nevertheless, they are a step in the right direction.
