These are South Africa's five biggest company losses reported in rand. Eskom and Sasol are missing, because both made money. Sappi and Anglo American report in dollars, so they are out. One measure for all five: loss after tax, not the headline number. Year ends differ, so this is each company's latest year. Number five, R1.9 billion, Transnet, for the year ended 31 March 2025. It is state owned, not listed like the others. Its loss still shrank 74 percent. Number four, R2.6 billion, ArcelorMittal South Africa, year ended 31 December 2025. The steelmaker lost money trading, not from write-downs. Number three, R4.7 billion, Sibanye-Stillwater, year ended 31 December 2025. Write-downs caused it, yet it still paid a R3.7 billion dividend. Number two, R4.8 billion, SPAR, for the 52 weeks to September 2025. That was the cost of leaving Poland, Switzerland and England. Number one, R7.1 billion, in the year ended 31 December 2025. A coal miner wrote down R8.8 billion as coal price forecasts fell. It still made cash and still paid a dividend. The biggest loss reported in rand belongs to Thungela Resources.
