Here are 5 big companies that quietly left the JSE. Number 1 is probably in your lounge. And the list is getting longer every year. Number 5, in 2020, is Pioneer Foods. They make Weet-Bix, White Star and Liqui Fruit. PepsiCo bought them for about R24 billion. It was one of PepsiCo's biggest deals outside America. Number 4, in 2022, is Massmart. That's Game, Makro and Builders. Walmart paid R6.4 billion for the rest of the shares. Twenty-two years on the JSE, gone. Number 3, in 2023, is Distell. Savanna, Hunters, Amarula, all of it. Heineken valued them at R40 billion and took them private. Number 2, also 2023, is Mediclinic. They were listed for 37 years. Remgro and a shipping giant valued the whole company at R75 billion. And in first place… In December 2025, this company sold for R55 billion. Canal+ bought every last share. A French company now owns your DStv and SuperSport. The JSE had over 600 companies in 2001. Today it's under 300. Compliance costs and low share prices are pushing them out. That's MultiChoice.
